Pre-K Butterfly Release Sparks Lesson in Bravery

Date Posted:

Our Pre-K classroom just celebrated a special milestone: the release of four butterflies they had raised right inside their classroom.

What began as tiny chrysalises soon grew into beautiful butterflies—lovingly named Princess, Scarlet, Ms. Cole
Jr. and Ms. Christina Jr. —thanks to weeks of careful observation, learning and excitement.

As the class gathered outside to set them free, the moment turned into more than just a science lesson. One student watched as a butterfly hesitated at the edge of the netting and said softly, “Princess is being so brave!” That simple sentence sparked a powerful classroom conversation about bravery, change and what lies ahead.

The students began to talk about how, just like Princess, they will need to be brave when fluttering off to kindergarten next year. The comparison wasn’t lost on the teachers, who were moved to see their students recognizing their own growth mirrored in the transformation of butterflies. “We work hard on self-awareness and fostering confidence-building social and emotional skills,” said Pre-K Teacher, Ms. Cole.

“It was remarkable to witness our students make these big emotional intelligence connections with the butterflies, a beautiful confirmation of their learning and deeper understanding of this big world they take on daily, just like our butterflies.”

Moments like this are at the heart of what learning looks like at Positive Tomorrows, where social-emotional growth and academic exploration go hand in hand. Whether it’s a science project or a conversation about growing up, our students are constantly being equipped with the tools and confidence they need to move forward. And just like Princess, Scarlett, Ms. Cole Jr. and Ms. Christina Jr., we know they’ll soar!
