Members of the Positive Tomorrows Summer Art Club hopped off the school van in the parking lot of Oklahoma Contemporary. They were full of excitement and concentrating hard to keep their feet from running into the art gallery. The students had participated in Art Club during summer break camp and were on their way to see their very own pieces displayed in a real art gallery.
“I wanted students to have the experience of seeing their art in a gallery and learning about careers in the arts,” said Sarah Caputo, Positive Tomorrows Art Teacher. “Each student got to choose their medium and what they would create, and we talked about what goes into creating an art show.”
In partnership with Inclusion in Art and Oklahoma Contemporary, the Positive Tomorrows Summer Art Club displayed its own show for a week in Oklahoma Contemporary’s Circle Gallery. Sculptures, paintings, drawings and multimedia pieces lined the walls, and the highlight for kids was seeing their pieces on display alongside professional exhibits at the gallery. During their visit, students learned about gallery etiquette and received a guided tour of the entire facility.
“It was pure joy when they saw their artwork on display,” said Caputo. “I hope the pride and sense of accomplishment is something they carry with them for years to come.”
