Thursday marked the return to school for nearly 50 students at Positive Tomorrows. While our staff has been preparing classrooms for our students’ arrival, some activities were left for the students themselves to enjoy.
Students were given the opportunity to participate in assembling stools and choosing where to place them in the room, as well as selecting which posters to hang on the walls.
When you don’t have a space in your home you can do these things in, being able to do it at school is really empowering for our students, said Rachel Durham, Positive Tomorrows’ development officer.
The students spent some of their maker time assembling the stools, and taking ownership of their learning space by arranging the stools as they saw fit.
More than one staff member called this the best first day of school they’ve seen in their time with us.
It’s been a magically calm and peaceful first couple of days of school. It already feels like it’s going to be a special year, Durham said.
Students in Mrs. Fryer’s class also produced a first-day podcast, introducing themselves and sharing the best parts of their day. You can listen to that podcast here.
